The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is searching for a Production Manager who wants to join a collaborative publishing team.   The Manager will ensure timely and high quality publication of two journals; manage relationships with online hosting and print/composition vendors; analyze associated data; and prepares and/or reviews and directs the creation of management reports. This is a exciting opportunity to build and shape the journals' production and publication workflows. The Production manager must be motivated, analytical, and professional with excellent interpersonal, communication, and people management skills and the ability to establish strong working relationships throughout all levels of the organization.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate publication of all journal articles, ensuring they meet SfN standards for style and format and publish on schedule.
  • Manages relationships with online hosting, production, and subscription vendors.
  • Creates workflow efficiencies and regularly reviews processes to ensure they remain current with industry standards and in-line with SfN goals.
  • Manages the online nonscientific content, including author instructions, editorial board listings, and journal promotional content, by recommending and implementing updates and revisions to text to enhance the journal sites, clarify policy, and improve readability.
  • Contributes to the development of additional approved technology enhancements such as dynamic article tools, podcasts, and webinars.
  • Monitors routine production expenses and regularly forecasts expected expenses against budget, and provides support to the Director of Scientific Publications on setting the annual production budget.
  • Provides data and statistics on published articles, subscription sales, and other key initiatives to the Director of Scientific Publications and senior staff as needed.
  • Ensures subscription renewals and new orders are processed correctly and timely in accordance with SfN accounting policies.
  • Ensures JNeurosci issues are mailed on time; monitors print runs.
  • Ensures high-quality customer service relating to subscriptions, online access, print distribution, etc.
  • Collaborates with the Editorial Manager, Scientific Operations Manager, and other internal stakeholders as needed.


  • Supervises Production Assistant.
  • Delegates effectively, communicates expectations clearly, and provides professional development opportunities.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 5 years experience with copyediting/proofreading, style guide management, vendor management, and production tracking systems.
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory or team-lead experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in scholarly medical or scientific publishing
  • Demonstrated success managing, implementing, and improving production workflows spanning multiple vendors and teams.
  • Ability to set priorities, take initiative, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines and budget.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work within and across teams to achieve results.
  • Highly organized, analytical, and detail-oriented.
  • Experience with eJournal Press and HighWire Press preferred; experience with journal web hosting and peer review platforms required.
  • Experience in building websites, working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Adobe programs.
  • Experience with subscription processing preferred.
