The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is searching for a Web Communications Specialist who will make impactful contributions to, the Society's public facing source of information and general education about results and implications of the latest neuroscience research.

In the Web Communications Specialist role, you will be responsible for developing, presenting, and promoting accurate and accessible scientific content for a public audience.  You will apply best practices in content dissemination both on the website and via multiple social media platforms to support the site's continued expansion. You will work in a highly collaborative environment across departments and must be able to manage multiple workflows and deadlines.  


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Compiles, proofs, updates, and maintains effective web content for site, including development of pages and management in the CMS of text, images, video, and audio, while adhering to and enforcing standards, style, SEO, and 508 web standards.
  • Independently develops, executes, and shapes social media strategies to promote site content, ensuring consistency with site strategy and organization's brand strategy, and coordinates with other SfN social media channels.
  • Monitors the social media editorial calendar, drafts messages, and monitors comments/conversations, analytics, and new technologies to inform ongoing strategy for user engagement.
  • Utilizes social media campaigning in order to expand public awareness of classroom resources for teachers to both teach neuroscience and understand the neuroscience of learning.
  • Monitors Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube analytics and uses these trends to optimize social campaigns for Manages social media marketing including Facebook ad campaigns.
  • Compiles and maintains website statistics and produces regular analysis that tells a descriptive story of user activity, key trends, and website usability to inform enhancements and initiatives. 
  • Oversees the growth of's site traffic in Google Analytics, watching for trends and/or major changes with goal of improving site stickiness.
  • Write, design, produce, and deliver a monthly electronic newsletter to the science-interested public who subscribe to receive the newsletter.
  • Responds to technical inquiries regarding
  • Supports the in-person promotion of at the annual meeting and executes the online promotion of the annual meeting for
  • Administers e-mails, working with department members on e-mail content/messaging, adherence to organizational style and tone, and closely monitoring schedule and frequency. Manages statistical reporting and analysis, highlighting key developments and developing appropriate strategy.
  • Ensures consistent visibility for founding partners; supports reporting to external funders and other key parties; and participates in additional development activities in support of the site.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required.  Degrees in communications, web design, science, science writing, journalism, or related field preferred.
  • 3 years of relevant experience.  
  • Experience with website content management systems and analytics required.
  • Experience in managing an organizational social media presence, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram required.
  • Experience in online communications, planning, managing, and developing website content and web projects, as well as writing and editing content for the web.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess knowledge of several new and traditional media and know how to implement strategy for different purposes. 
  • Fluency in social media platforms and strategies.
  • Must work well under pressure and be able to manage several projects at once.
  • Excellent time and project management skills.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, organizational skills, attention to detail, and quality control.
  • Experience executing multi-faceted communications campaigns, editing and writing, and adhering to style guides and web usability guidelines.
  • Ability to manage and analyze data, and proven judgment in distributing content.
  • Creativity to communicate in different ways, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to form and maintain relationships through communication and networking a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment while remaining responsible and accountable as an individual contributor.
