The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is searching for a Senior Accounting & Compliance Manager that will provide leadership to the accounting team and effectively carry out all accounting, tax and compliance reporting, debt financing, and cash management functions. The Manager will ensure company accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles. In addition, they will oversee the accounting operations and quality of the accounting function by identifying process efficiencies and technology solutions to streamline workflow and ensure deadlines are met.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

General Accounting Operations

  • Educates employees about financial principles, policies, and practices.
  • Oversees the production of financial statements and management reports as needed.
  • Configures accounting system to enable efficient accounting transactions for timely and accurate reporting.
  • Oversees the development of and adherence to the monthly and annual close schedules.
  • Oversees the processing, analysis, and monthly reconciliation of all general ledger accounts, and monthly review and approval.
  • Performs a quarterly review of financial statements with the CFO.
  • Oversees monitoring of the cash management system, including cash flow projections, investment positions, the Society's line of credit, cash disbursements, and debt servicing.
  • Oversees the set up and maintenance of all banking accounts and merchant accounts.
  • Oversees recording of all cash and investment positions, including periodic valuation documentation, as needed.
  • Oversees semi-monthly payroll processing, timesheet processing, and associated benefit processing.
  • Ensure Managed Travel Services, including the accurate accounting for travel expenditures are within policy.
  • Identifies ways to improve on cost-efficient methods of managing all cash activities.


  • Monitors and enforces statutory and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitors and enforces internal controls and the safeguarding organizational assets.
  • Oversees internal standard accounting reports and maintenance of the organization's records in accordance with GAAP.
  • Participates in the development, maintenance, communication, and enforcement of financial policies and procedures.
  • Works with Operations & Development staff to ensure all state registrations for fundraising are up to date.
  • Oversees the preparation and filing of all required federal returns.
  • Oversees filing of annual audits with Federal Audit Clearinghouse and other necessary parties as required.


  • Oversees preparation and execution of the finance and retirement plan audits by coordinating with staff and auditors to complete the audit.
  • Reviews all audit findings and prepares an action plan to ensure the remedy of findings.

Property Management

  • Ensures accounting staff review all aspects of the Monthly Investor Reports, coordinates the monthly feedback to the property management team, and ensures adequate funding for LLC operations.
  • Coordinates the annual property valuation process, assesses CapEx and Comp models for reasonableness, and present to executive and volunteer management as needed.
  • Ensures completion of the property management accounting for an intercompany ledger.

Annual Meeting

  • Manages SfN and temporary staff in support of Attendee Services and the business office.
  • Coordinates with Meeting Services staff to ensure logistical planning needs are met, to include temporary staffing, and Attendee Services /Business Office floor plan setup.


  • Supervises staff consisting of Accounting Manager, two Sr. Accountants and an Accounting Associate.
  • Delegates effectively, communicates expectations clearly, and provides professional development opportunities.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of accounting experience in a management role (association or nonprofit preferred).
  • Demonstrated leadership with prior supervisory experience, minimum 3 years.
  • MBA or CPA preferred. 


  • Requires outstanding interpersonal and diplomatic skills,
  • Strong analytical and quantitative abilities,
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience managing budgets and goals.
  • Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail is a necessity.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with various deadlines and the ability to prioritize are essential.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Must be an independent thinker and work well under pressure
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, cash management, budgeting and cost control principles including GAAP is required.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations is preferred.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
