The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is searching for a Journal Assistant that will provide support in processing manuscripts for the Journal of Neuroscience and eNeuro. This role is ideal for a candidate who is passionate about science and wants to use their project management, customer service, and attention to detail to process, coordinate, and learn about manuscript submission.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Processes receipt of manuscripts via the online submission system.
  • Handles incoming mail through Journal e-mail(s), as well as correspondence sent directly to Editorial Assistant.
  • Handles and directs author and reviewer status questions and e-mails.
  • Inputs manuscript information into the manuscript submission system as needed.
  • Invites selected reviewers to review manuscripts.      
  • Assigns reviewers to evaluate the manuscript and make certain the reviews are submitted on time.
  • Ensures the accepted manuscript is completed before sending to the printer.
  • Corresponds with authors to make sure all checklist information is received in a timely manner.
  • Receives copyright agreement forms and ensure they are completed by all authors.
  • Coordinates manuscript related issues with editors through consultations via online submission system and through email.
  • Processes submission fee reimbursements.

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication or publishing required.
  • Minimum 1 year office experience.
  • Data entry experience is helpful.
  • Proficiency in using MS Word, intermediate Excel skills, strong Internet experience, and the demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly.

  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent organizational skills with an ability to multi-task to keep multiple projects on track to meet deadlines.      
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly developed customer service skills.
  • Must possess a high degree of flexibility, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently with the ability to work in a fast-paced small team environment.
  • Serve as an engaged and involved team member.
  • Demonstrated good judgment and team leadership.
