The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is searching for an Advocacy and Training Associate that will help provide perspective for logistical and programmatic support for SfN's scientific federal advocacy and training programs, including policy research, coordination to Capitol Hill, and in-person and digital training events. This Associate role is ideal for someone who has a strong interest in life sciences and wants to work towards developing a career in public policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • In coordination with the Federal Advocacy Manager, implement federal advocacy efforts in support of scientific research, including development and expansion of Congressional neuroscience "champions", SfN's Capitol Hill Day activities and Hill briefings; and assist in the engagement of positive, proactive communications concerning the role of animals in research.
  • Provide research and perspective on expansion of advocacy and policy efforts around federal research funding and animals in research.
  • Assist with drafting and updating letters, statements, testimony, handouts and any other communications for use in federal advocacy efforts.
  • Work with the team to coordinate communications and programming for the Committee on Animals in Research, Government on Public Affairs Committee, and Neuroscience Training Committee as needed.
  • Supports preparation for annual meeting events (Animals in Research Panel, Graduate School Fair, pre conference courses, and Advocacy and Training booth presence).
  • Supports the development and execution of virtual learning initiatives (digital training series, webinars, and virtual conferences), as needed.

 General Duties

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Degrees in Neuroscience, other life sciences and public policy preferred.
  • 2 years of relevant experience, such as on Capitol Hill and/or familiarity with the federal policy issues, or the government affairs department of an association.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience providing scientific perspective to advocacy efforts.
  • Familiarity with scientific education and research issues preferred.
  • Project management and/or event planning experience preferred.
  • Ability to organize multiple projects, with sometimes competing deadlines.
  • Ability to interface with members of the scientific community at all career stages.
